Volcano heaven in Puerto Varas

Further south to the edge of the Chilean Lake District and Patagonia. As we continued our drive down  Ruta 5, the Pan American Highway, we saw the white cone of the Orsono Volcano  looming in the distance. We were lucky enough to have it and the surrounding volcanoes as a constant presence for the next four days, lucky because they are so often obscured by cloud.

Our cabana overlooked a lake with the range of volcanic peaks in the background and we spent each night cooking and watching the evening sunlight light change on them. Surely one of the best views of any trip.

We went on  an accompanied kayaking trip through a winding, narrow inlet till we came out into the lake with the Orsono volcano before us. Awesome!

We also had a walk through the surrounding countryside along the edge of the volcano with our guide Isabel and ended up at the spectacular Petrohue falls.
